Before You Light

Step by Step
- Set the launch tube on firm, level ground and confirm the open landing zone around it, clear of overhead obstructions and buildings, before lighting.
- Check for wind before you light anything. Don't light a sky shot in heavy wind, since a gust can carry a lit shell off its intended path mid-launch.
- Light it with a long candle or a "phooljhari", keeping your elbow straight so the candle keeps your hand back from the tube.
- Never hold a firework while lighting it. Ignite at ground level and retreat immediately once it catches, back into the open landing zone you've already checked is clear.
- Never ignite a firework inside another container. The launch tube itself is the only enclosure a sky shot should ever fire from, and nothing else should be placed around or over it.
If It Doesn't Go Off
If a shell fails to launch, or a multi-shot cake stops partway through its sequence, don't approach the tube right away and don't tamper with it to see what's wrong. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak the whole tube in a bucket of water before treating it as safe to move. A cake that's gone quiet mid-sequence can still have unfired shells inside it.
