Age-Appropriate Cracker Finder for Kids

Answer a few questions about your child's age and get a safety-first list of suitable cracker categories. A free planning tool for parents.

Short answer:

  • PESO, India's fireworks safety regulator, sets no minimum age for crackers — the rule is continuous adult supervision at every age, and readiness matters more than a birthday.
  • Under about 5: watching only. Ground fountains and flower pots, lit by an adult, seen from a few steps back.
  • Roughly 5–7: no-flame play. Snake tablets on a table, cap rolls, ring caps — nothing lit goes into the child's hand.
  • Roughly 8–9 and older, once a child reliably follows instructions the first time: can hold an already-lit sparkler at arm's length, still under direct supervision.

Verified details are being loaded and appear here shortly.

How to use it

Judge your child by readiness, not age in years. Pick the row below that matches how well they follow instructions and stay put when told to, not the number on their last birthday cake. Match that row's category, then read the supervision note before anything gets lit — it's the part that actually keeps a session safe.

Never, at any ageAll agesAerial shells, rockets, self-ignition, re-lighting a dudStays an adult-only job, done well away from where children stand.

A child who doesn't fit a row cleanly drops to the one below it. There's no penalty for treating a nine-year-old like a seven-year-old for one more Diwali; there's a real one for the reverse.

Why readiness beats birthday

PESO's official guidance never sets an age cutoff. What it states, without exception, is that an adult always supervises and that small children never handle or use fireworks alone. That single rule is why the bands above describe behaviour (following instructions, staying put, not reaching for a lit item) rather than years lived. Our kids crackers range is built around exactly this split: fountains and spinners for the watching-only band, sparklers and fancy packs for children ready to hold an already-lit item. For the full supervision rules, distances, and what to do if a child is burned, see crackers safety for kids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official minimum age for bursting crackers in India?

No. PESO's Deepavali safety notice sets a supervision rule that applies at every age: an adult always supervises, and small children never handle fireworks alone. It is not a birthday cutoff.

What crackers can a 5-year-old handle?

At that age, treat it as no-flame play: snake tablets placed on a table and watched, or cap rolls and ring caps that snap without any flame. Nothing lit goes into a 5-year-old's hand.

Can an 8-year-old light their own sparkler?

No. Even in the adult-lit handheld band, the adult always does the lighting. The child holds the sparkler at arm's length only once it's already burning, and only if they reliably follow instructions.

My child doesn't fit neatly into one band. What do I do?

Drop to the more cautious band below. There's no downside to treating a child as younger than their years for a session; there is a real one to treating them as older.
