How Green Crackers Work
How green crackers cut particulate matter 30% (or 20% PM + 10% gas) via SWAS/STAR/SAFAL formulas, and how to verify the CSIR-NEERI QR code before buying.
The shell is smaller, the ash-forming filler is stripped out, and a dust-suppressant additive is mixed into the composition so it releases water vapour or air as the cracker burns, pulling particulate matter and gas out of the smoke before it reaches you. The spark, the flash, the bang, all of that stays the same. What changes is the chemistry underneath, engineered by CSIR-NEERI to a certified emissions standard rather than left to a traditional recipe.
The short answer:
- A certified green cracker must cut particulate matter (PM) by at least 30% versus a conventional cracker of the same type, or by at least 20% PM plus a further 10% cut in gases such as SO₂ and NO₂, two separate certification paths, not one blended number.
- The cut comes from four levers: a smaller shell, less ash-forming raw material, reduced overall raw-material load, and dust-suppressant additives that release water vapour or air during the burn.
- Three CSIR-NEERI formulation families exist: SWAS (Safe Water Releaser), STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) and SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium).
- Green crackers are made without barium nitrate, and PESO's approval required them to be free of mercury, arsenic and barium as well.
- The Supreme Court's noise ceiling of 125 dB(AI) at 4 metres applies to all crackers, and PESO's green-cracker approval was conditioned on lower noise alongside lower emissions.

The certified standard: two paths, not one number
CSIR-NEERI, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, set the bar a cracker has to clear to be sold as "green." There are two ways to clear it, and a manufacturer only needs one:
- Path A — at least a 30% reduction in particulate matter (PM) emissions compared with a conventional cracker of the same category.
- Path B — at least a 20% PM reduction, combined with at least a 10% reduction in gaseous emissions such as SO₂ and NO₂.
Collapsing that into "30% cleaner" misses the point. A formulation that hits Path B might cut particulates by only 20%, and still be a fully certified green cracker, because the gas reduction makes up the difference. Both routes measure the same thing against the same baseline: a conventional cracker in the identical product category, so a green flower pot is judged against a conventional flower pot, not against a sparkler or a sound cracker.
The four engineering levers behind the reduction
The reduction isn't achieved by using less gunpowder and hoping for the best. CSIR-NEERI's formulation work changed four specific things in the composition:
- Smaller shell size — less shell material means less material burning, and less material burning means less residue in the air.
- No ash-forming raw material — ingredients that would otherwise burn down into airborne ash are left out of the mix.
- Reduced raw-material load overall — the total quantity of chemical composition packed into the cracker is cut, category by category.
- Dust-suppressant additives — the compound includes additives that release water vapour or air as the cracker burns, actively pulling particulate matter out of the smoke plume rather than just producing less of it in the first place.
That fourth lever is the one that makes green chemistry different from simply making a smaller cracker. It's an active suppression step baked into the composition, not a passive side effect of using less material.
SWAS, STAR and SAFAL: the three formulation families
CSIR-NEERI didn't design one green recipe. It designed three formulation families, and different manufacturers licence different ones depending on the product category:
- SWAS (Safe Water Releaser) releases water vapour into the surrounding air as the cracker burns. That vapour acts as the dust suppressant, physically knocking particulate matter down and diluting the gaseous emissions coming off the burn.
- STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) is the second formulation family.
- SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium) is the third.
All three are certified against the same Path A / Path B standard above. The name marks which formulation family a product belongs to, not a difference in how clean it is, and a manufacturer's choice between them usually comes down to which product category and effect they're formulating for.
What's missing from the composition
Part of "how green crackers work" is what CSIR-NEERI's chemists took out, not just what they added. Conventional crackers commonly use barium salts for colour and effect, and barium is a hazardous element in that context. Green crackers are formulated without barium nitrate.
PESO, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, is the government body that has to sign off before any cracker formulation, green or otherwise, can be manufactured and sold. Its approval of the green-cracker category was conditioned on three things: lower pollution, lower noise, and a composition free of mercury, arsenic and barium. All three conditions had to be met together, not any one of them alone.
Sound: quieter, not silent
Noise is regulated separately from emissions, and the same national ceiling applies to every legally sold cracker, green or conventional. The Supreme Court prohibits any firecracker from generating a noise level above 125 dB(AI) or 145 dB(C) pk, measured 4 metres from the point of bursting. For a series of joined crackers, that limit drops further, by 5 log₁₀(N) dB, where N is the number of crackers joined together, so a longer chain has a tighter per-unit ceiling.
PESO's approval conditions for green crackers explicitly included lower noise alongside lower pollution, and PESO is the agency that tests and certifies compliance before manufacture is permitted. A green sound cracker built to that standard is engineered to sit under the same ceiling with margin, but "quieter" and "compliant" are not the same claim as "silent." Same effect, cleaner smoke
Here's the part that surprises first-time buyers: a green cracker looks and sounds like the conventional version of the same product. A green flower pot still throws its shower of sparks. A green sound cracker still produces a bang. The certified reduction is in what comes off the burn, not in the spark, flash or noise you experience. The other honest point: less polluting is not the same as pollution-free. A green cracker still produces smoke and residue, just measurably less of it than the conventional item it replaces. If a household burns a much larger volume of green crackers than it would have burned in conventional ones, the total emissions for the evening can still add up. The reduction is per-cracker, so the arithmetic still depends on quantity. How to confirm a cracker is genuinely green
The chemistry above only benefits you if the box in front of you is actually certified, and the market has uncertified products claiming to be "green" with no formulation behind the label. CSIR-NEERI's system for proving certification has two marks:
- The CSIR-NEERI green logo, printed on the packaging.
- A QR code on the box, which you scan using the official "CSIR NEERI Green QR Code" app, available on the Google Play Store.
If a product is marketed as green but carries no logo and no scannable QR code, treat the "green" label as a marketing claim rather than a certified one.
