Stage 1: preparing the explosive composition
Every cracker starts as a mixture: oxidizers, reducing agents, binders, and the agents that produce sound or colour, combined in precise proportions. Once mixed, the compound is granulated or pressed into pellets so it distributes evenly through the finished cracker. Get the proportions wrong and the effect is inconsistent; this is the most chemically sensitive stage in the whole process, and the one requiring the most experience to get right.
Stage 2: building the casing
The shell that holds the compound is made from cardboard tubes or thick paper, molded and shaped to a specific size for the cracker it will become. It has to do two jobs: contain the mixture during storage and handling, then withstand the heat and pressure generated the moment the cracker fires.
