The Pre-Lighting Checklist: 15 Things Before You Strike a Match

Every Diwali cracker mishap that makes the news traces back to something skipped in the five minutes before the first item was lit — a bucket that wasn't filled, a synthetic dupatta that wasn't tucked away, a kid standing closer than anyone noticed. The pre-lighting checklist below is fifteen things to confirm before you strike a match, in the order you'd actually walk through them, not a random list to skim once and forget.

1. Fill a bucket of water and keep it in the firing zone, not in the kitchen or the balcony three rooms away. It needs to be within arm's reach of whoever is lighting, not a fetch-it-when-needed item.

2. Keep a bucket of dry sand next to it. Sand is what actually smothers a ground fire or a dud that's still smoking; water alone doesn't handle every situation, especially anything that's still emitting sparks.

3. Clear the firing patch of dry leaves, paper and loose cloth. A gust carrying one spark onto a pile of dry leaves is a more common cause of a scare than the cracker itself misbehaving.

4. Check everyone's clothing for synthetic fabric. Nylon and polyester catch and melt onto skin in a way cotton doesn't; anyone lighting or standing close should be in cotton if possible.

5. Tie back long hair. It's an easy thing to forget in the excitement and an easy thing for a spark to catch.

6. Cover feet — no open sandals or bare feet in the firing zone. Ground-level sparks and hot debris land at foot level first.

7. Light with an agarbatti or a long taper, not a matchstick held close to your hand. This matters even for small handheld items — a Colour Matches box, for instance, is a match-style stick that flares on strike, so keep the striking hand and the flare point as far apart as the item allows.

8. Confirm which handheld items are actually meant for kids, and which aren't. A Mini Twinkling Star is sized and rated for younger children's supervised handling, but standard Crackling Star Match and Deluxe Twinkling Star sticks are supervised-only, not hand-to-a-child-and-walk-away items — check the rating on the pack before deciding who lights what.

9. Check wind direction before you start, not after the first item is already lit. Fire with the wind carrying sparks away from the spectator area, never toward it.

10. Keep the rest of the box well away from the firing zone. One stray spark landing in an open box of stock is how a five-minute show becomes a five-second one.

11. Set a no-relighting rule for duds on the spot. If something doesn't go off, it waits — don't walk up and try again immediately; treat it as still potentially live.

12. Designate one person to light, and have everyone else stay back. Two people reaching for the same item at once is an easy way to lose track of who's actually holding the flame.

13. Have a first-aid kit within reach, not just in the house somewhere. Burn gel or a clean cloth for a minor burn should be as close as the water bucket.

14. Know your nearest hospital or clinic, even if you don't expect to need it. This is a five-second check on your phone, done before the show starts, not looked up mid-panic.

15. Walk the spectator area and confirm the distance from the firing zone one last time, especially if kids have drifted closer while everyone was setting up. This is the last check, right before the first light — everything else on this list matters less if people are standing too close when it happens.
